Top 3 Reasons to Compost
| ![]() |
How to Get Started
- First you will need to select what kind of compost bin you want.
- The first, and easiest is the wire mesh bin. This method can take up to 2 years for the greens to decay, but the results are great. (see picture 1).
- The second bin is a fence bin. This also takes about two years to decay (see picture 2).
- Another is a garbage bin with holes drilled into it. This also takes about 2 years. (see picture 3).
- The last, and perhaps most difficult to make is a rotating bin. The greens can take as little as two weeks to decay and is my personal favorite (see picture 4).
- Now that you have selected the kind of bin you want, its time to fill it. You can use grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste. Also, kitchen scraps are great too. You will need to stir your compost about once every two or three days. You may add worms to speed up the decay process. You can buy them from your local fishing store or collect them at night after or during a hard rainfall.
When the compost turns to dirt, you are ready to spread it on your garden, flowers, and trees.
